presents Creative Cocktail Hour, with an opening by artist Miky Fabrega,
and a performance by Santogold. Creative Cocktail Hour is the Third
Thursday of every month, running from 6-10pm. Creative Cocktail Hour
is $10/Free for Real Art Ways Members.
Miky
Fabrega is a visual
artist living and working in Panama City.
Fabrega's
current series includes paired paintings and photographs, the portraits
of Latino maids from his native Panama City and his virtual "friends" in
the MYSPACE cyber community.
Miky's work speaks to the way we as humans live amongst each other
internationally, and the ways we represent ourselves in the age
of online social networks. Mysapce, by nature, is a representational
forum,
one
where people
choose
how they
want
themselves to appear to the observing world. Miky's position as
a Panamianian artist, comming from the "third" world
and making art for the "first" comments on the interconnectedness
and cultural exchange of the digital age, while his portraits of
maids draws attention to an overlooked laboring class, itself a
product of contemporary globalized culture.

Santogold is a vocalist, artist and actress
from Brooklyn, NY.
Sometimes basement rock, sometimes Bananarama-soundclash,
Santogold is a vehicle for singer/songwriter Santi White's well drawn
late night fight lines and robot-witch scat on the beat, driving
dub and 80's-pop influences from song to song. Warbling bass, island
upbeat, and deep-south snap provide foundation for White's whispering
lilts and tension-ridden verses.
Though without official band members,
the ingredients are many: spaghetti western-outlaw, roots rock and
digital street blip are each laced by White's incomparable breathless
melody. While White and John Hill, aka Johnny Rodeo formed the
nucleus of this creation, the Santogold landscape is speckled with
the flavor of renown contemporary DJ's and all around underground
fly kids who have rallied behind her to deliver a versatile, consistent
array of tracks: Switch, Disco D, Freq Nasty, DJ XXXchange, lead
guitarist Clifford "Moonie" Pusey of Steel Pulse, former
Bad Brains drummer Chuck Treece, Naeem Juwan of Spank Rock, and Professional
snowboarder Trevor "Trouble" Andrew. Each participant sculpts
the sound around White's candid verses and vocal melodies pushing
the width of Santogold's scope.
